General information on steel sheets

One of the primary forms of steel utilised in manufacturing are Steel Sheets or Plates – where distinctions are made according to material thickness and manufacturing process. Steel Sheets, depending on their chemical composition can be manufactured with differing degrees of hardness, formability, with a corrosion- and heat- resistance or a particular drawing. This versatility is cause for the popularity of Steel Sheets in most areas of construction.

Steel is the most recycled material in the world because it is only used and never consumed. Steel Sheets are therefore a uniquely sustainable choice as they are 100% recyclable.

How are steel sheets manufactured?

The steelmaking process begins with the processing of iron ore. Rocks containing iron ore are ground and ore extracted using magnetic rollers. Fine-grained iron ore is processed into coarse-grained clumps for use in the blast furnace. Next coal is cleaned of all impurities in a coke furnace, yielding an almost pure form of carbon. Finally a mixture of iron ore and coal is molten in a blast furnace to create pig iron from which steel is made.

Molten steel then passes from the furnace through continuous casters which form it into slabs, blooms and billets. These primary steel products can then be transformed into a wide range of finished steel products such as Steel Sheets through hot and cold rolling processes.

The rolling processes are guided by the end product required and usually involve the reducing of material thickness whilst introducing chemicals to develop specific characteristics.

In the Kloeckner Online Shop sheets and plates are available in an extensive range of widths, gauges and finishes to suit your desired application.

Which sectors utilise steel sheets in their manufacture?

The applications for steel sheets and plates are extensive, hence they are used in multiple industries:
