General information on steel tubes

Steel tubes come in many shapes, sizes and with varying cross sections: square, rectangular, oval or round.

Requirements concerning the characteristics of steel tubes can vary according to the area of application. Steel tube is used in many industries from construction to office furniture where the requirements are varied from high strength for loadbearing structures to material with a superior surface finish for office furniture.

Steel tubes are an essential component in car manufacturing, where weight reduction is paramount.

How are steel pipes manufactured?

Steel pipes can be purchased with welded or seamless seams.

The steel tube supplied by Kloeckner Metals UK is split into two main categories Structural Hollow Section (Hot and Cold Formed) and ERW tube.

The manufacturing processes of hot finished and cold formed hollow sections are essentially different. Hot finished hollow sections are formed at normalising temperature. While cold formed hollow sections are formed at ambient temperature. This results in a number of different characteristics, the main one being that hot finished hollow sections pass through a furnace and have a much tighter corner profile.

Seamless pipe is made when steel billet (circular) is heated and then either pushed or pulled (while being rapidly rotated) over a mandrel. The mandrel has a piercing point positioned in the centre of the billet. The mandrel mill process creates a hollow tubular end product. Seamless pipe can be made from 1/8” to 26” in diameter.

Where do steel tubes come into operation?

Steel pipes have multiple operational purposes and therefore commonly utilized in the following industries:

  • Construction industries
  • Machine and plant construction
  • Manufacturing of agricultural machines
  • Car manufacturing
  • Furniture industries
  • Pipeline construction
  • Conveyor technology
  • Power plant technology
  • Chemistry and petrochemical sector

What are the benefits of steel tubes?

Depending on the material and manufacturing processes applied, steel pipes offer the following array of benefits:

  • Light and easy machinability
  • High carrying capacity
  • Compressive strength
  • Heat resistance
  • Recyclability
