General information on ERW tubes

Steel tubes can be manufactured using common hot and cold rolling techniques, or through electric resistance welding. The finished product of which is commonly shortened to ERW tube. Although light weight, ERW tubes have great structural performance and are therefore applied in variety of industrial and non-industrial sectors. Like round hollow sections, ERW tubes have more stiffness in twisting and are often used for low and medium pressure applications such as the transportation of liquids and gasses.

How are ERW tubes manufactured?

ERW tubes are manufactured from steel sheets. The steel is passed through a mill system, whose rollers bend the sheet until its edges meet. Then, high frequency electric resistance welding progressively fuses the longitudinal seam shut (adding no filler material in the process). The majority of the heat for the welding process is generated by the electrical resistance of the material, hence the name ERW.
