General information on angles

Steel & metal angles can be manufactured in a range of different materials. Named by their distinct shape that is characterised by a 90 degree bend, angle iron is part of the greater family of steel sections. These long products can be purchased with an equal or unequal angle, varying thicknesses or a variety of surface treatments. Treatments and coatings generally help tailor steel products to specific industrial applications and industries. Customisable angle lengths, material and surface treatments in the Kloeckner online shop help cater for your needs. Stock up low inventory with the simple click of a button.

How are angles manufactured?

Depending on the material, angles are produced using different rolling and bending techniques. Standard hot and cold rolled steel sections (and therefore angle iron) are manufactured by melting primary steel products. Blooms, billets and ingots are heated in a furnace at approximately 1200° Celsius. At this stage the chemical composition of the melt is analysed and closely monitored. The melt can be manipulated to reinforce desirable material characteristics. This is commonly achieved by adding or removing specific alloying elements (like nickel or carbon). Subjecting steel to high temperatures allows quick reforming of material into an angular shape using only a few rolling cycles. Hot rolling creates blueish mill scale on the metal surface, which can be removed – using descaling, shot blasting or oiling - at a later stage in the production process. A descaled angle showcases a smoother and therefore brighter finish. Angles can in addition be subjected to further rolling at room temperature (cold rolling) to increase material strength & hardness. Due to their effect on mechanical properties, rolling procedures and temperatures should always be selected to suit the application purpose of the end product.

Which industries utilise steel angles in their manufacture?

Industries that utilise metal angles span from construction, engineering, architecture to fencing, storage & packing all the way to automotive and telecommunication. Other areas of application include bridge building as handrailing or in the manufacturing of furniture.

What are the benefits of utilizing metal angles?

Steel angles are a staple good in most construction projects. They are popular for many reasons: Angles are universally available. Large quantities can be produced at great speed and comparatively low costs. They are widely applicable due to their versatile nature. Angles are fully recyclable and therefore considered an environmentally conscious choice. Low carbon contents can help create a product that is easily manipulated and connected to other materials. Two angles can be welded together to form a tee section for extra support in e.g. building structures. Altering the shape, size and length of angles does not require specialist machinery or tooling, ultimately reducing costs for machining. Due to its distinct shape (a right angle), steel angle iron showcases superior resistance to bending.
